Description

Gold francs were common circulation coins in France for a long time. They can trace their roots back to 1360, when the first coins were called “francs” by the people. It was not until 1795 that the franc became the national currency, with one franc being divided into 10 décimes or 100 centimes.

The 20-franc gold coin with the Marianne represents one of the best-known variants of this currency. It shows the image of Marianne on the obverse, who is depicted with the iconic Phrygian cap and a laurel wreath. These coins have a fine weight of 5.805 grams and thus correspond to the gold content of other well-known coins such as the 20-franc Vreneli or the 8-florin gold gulden.
