Description
The Maple Leaf gold coin is a Canadian bullion coin. The name comes from the characteristic sugar maple leaf on the reverse of the coin, which is also a central element of the Canadian flag.
Since 2013, the 1-oz version has had an additional optical security feature applied by laser. A second, much smaller maple leaf is laser-engraved next to the stem of the maple leaf. The last two digits of the year of issue are visible inside the leaf. Due to the bilingualism of the Canadians, the inscription on the coin is in English and French.
The production of Maple Leaf gold coins started in 1979 at the Royal Canadian Mint. One factor that played a major role in the popularity of the Maple Leaf gold coins was the issue of apartheid in South Africa, which caused much uproar. Many countries decided to stop buying Krugerrand gold coins at the time. Instead, the Canadians wanted to bring an alternative to the market and so the Maple Leaf gold coin was created as the second modern bullion coin in the world.
Thanks to its long history, the Canadian bullion coin has become a popular gold investment. The Maple Leaf is available to buy in all branches oft he GVS bullion group.
