Description

The gold gulden is a prestigious gold coin with a rich history. Originally minted by the Austrian Empire in the 19th century, the gulden was based on the weights of the gold coins of the Latin Monetary Union in order to facilitate international trade.

Available in denominations of 4 florins and 8 florins, these coins also correspond to 10 and 20 francs respectively.

The coin is a valuable collector’s item and a sound investment. The restrikes of the historic gold gulden, which are produced by the renowned Austrian Mint, bear the minting date 1892, the last year of official minting. These restrikes are popular with collectors and investors alike.

With a fineness of 900/1000 gold and a low copper content, the gold gulden has a beautiful reddish tone. The obverse is emblazoned with the portrait of Emperor Franz Joseph I, surrounded by a laurel wreath. Austria’s coat of arms adorns the reverse.

The gulden/florin was originally replaced by the crown in the course of the currency reform in 1892, but remained in circulation in Austria until 1900. It is interesting to note that the term “florin” is associated with various historical coins, as this currency denomination was used by several states.
